Mental Health Nurse – Maternal Mental Health Project

About the role

The Mental Health Nurse will join a four‑year Maternal Mental Health project, providing assessment, treatment and psycho‑education to pregnant and postpartum women in Lilongwe and Mzimba districts.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments for women with maternal mental health problems.
• Plan and deliver therapeutic treatment, including medication, in collaboration with primary health care facilities and mental health clinicians.
• Facilitate referrals to appropriate services when needed.
• Provide individual, group, family and crisis psychotherapy.
• Deliver psycho‑education to women, families and communities.
• Coordinate regularly with PHC and district health facilities and represent the project.
• Build capacity of PHC staff through coaching and on‑the‑job training.
• Train and guide volunteer health advisors.
• Support awareness‑raising campaigns and advocacy to destigmatise mental illness.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing from a recognised institution.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar mental health nursing role.
• Commitment to the organisation’s Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy.
