Social Worker – Mzuzu

About the role

The Social Worker will provide psychosocial support to individuals, families and communities facing social, emotional and health‑related challenges. Reporting to the Umoza Project Coordinator, the role involves assessment, counselling, care planning and advocacy for vulnerable groups.

Key responsibilities

• Assess social, emotional and practical needs of clients through interviews, home visits and case reviews.
• Provide counselling and support to help clients cope with trauma, illness, poverty, abuse or other challenges.
• Develop and implement individualized care and support plans.
• Advocate for the rights and welfare of children, the elderly, people with disabilities and patients.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers, educators, legal officers and community leaders.
• Maintain accurate case records, reports and documentation in line with professional standards.
• Conduct community outreach, awareness campaigns and support groups as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
• Minimum 3 years experience in social work, counselling or community development.
• Registered/licensed by a relevant professional body where applicable.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and counselling skills with cultural sensitivity.
• Excellent report writing, record‑keeping and case management abilities.
• High integrity, confidentiality and professionalism.
• Willingness to work with mentally ill individuals and their families.
