Mental Health Clinician – Lilongwe

About the role

The Mental Health Clinician will report to the Team Leader and is responsible for assessing, diagnosing and treating psychiatric conditions, delivering therapy, and training clinical staff within the Maternal Mental Health project in Lilongwe.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct patient interviews, physical and psychiatric examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and maintain comprehensive documentation.
• Diagnose psychiatric and medical conditions, prescribe appropriate treatments, and arrange referrals or transfers in line with the Mental Health Treatment Act and SJOG guidelines.
• Provide individual, family and group therapy using diverse psychotherapeutic techniques.
• Train district and primary health care staff on diagnosis and treatment following WHO’s mhGAP.
• Apply evidence‑based therapeutic approaches while respecting patients’ spiritual and cultural needs.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine (Mental Health) from a recognised institution.
• 3–5 years’ experience in project coordination or a similar NGO role.
• Strict adherence to the organisation’s Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and psychiatric examination.
• Prescribing and treatment planning for mental health conditions.
• Knowledge of WHO mhGAP guidelines.
• Ability to deliver individual, family and group psychotherapy.
