Maternal and Child Health Nurse

About the role

The Maternal and Child Health Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to women and newborns throughout the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods in Neno District. The role includes bedside care, emergency obstetric and neonatal support, mentorship, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver evidence‑based nursing care, monitor labour, administer medications and manage equipment such as cardiotocographs and monitors.
• Conduct patient assessments aligned with WHO Safe Childbirth Flow Chart and document findings.
• Support emergency resuscitation for peripartum women and newborns and participate in rapid response teams.
• Mentor and coach nursing staff, interns and students in maternal and child health care.
• Uphold infection prevention and control standards and ensure safe handling of equipment and consumables.
• Maintain equipment availability, report shortages, and coordinate preventive maintenance using Upkeep software.
• Maintain accurate nursing documentation, contribute to morbidity and mortality reviews, audits and quality improvement.
• Identify nursing gaps, design capacity‑building initiatives and facilitate CPD sessions on MCH care.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse and Midwife with a Bachelor’s degree, postgraduate qualification in Midwifery and at least 3 years of clinical experience in maternal and child health.
• Strong clinical judgment, ability to work under pressure and collaborate in inter‑professional teams.
• Compassionate, resilient, patient‑centered and committed to continuous professional learning.

Required skills

• Obstetric point‑of‑care ultrasound (POCUS) and cardiotocograph operation.
• Equipment stewardship for oxygen concentrators, resuscitation stations and emergency trolleys.
• Infection prevention and control practices.
• Data management and reporting using DHIS2 and Upkeep software.
