Maternal and Child Health Nurse

About the role

The Maternal and Child Health Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to women and newborns throughout the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods in Neno District. The role includes bedside patient care, emergency obstetric and neonatal management, mentorship, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver evidence‑based nursing care, monitor labour, administer medications and manage equipment such as cardiotocographs and monitors.
• Conduct and document patient assessments in line with WHO Safe Childbirth Flow Chart and support emergency resuscitation for peripartum women and newborns.
• Mentor and coach nursing staff, interns and students, and ensure adherence to infection prevention and control standards.
• Maintain equipment availability, report shortages, and coordinate preventive maintenance with the biomedical team.
• Maintain accurate nursing documentation, participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, and support data‑driven quality improvement.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery with a postgraduate qualification in Midwifery or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years clinical experience in maternal and child health, registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi in good standing.
• Experience in mentorship, CPD facilitation and nursing leadership is an asset.

Required skills

• Proficiency with obstetric point‑of‑care ultrasound (POCUS) and cardiotocograph use.
• Equipment stewardship for oxygen concentrators, resuscitation stations and emergency trolleys.
• Infection prevention and control practices.
• Data management and reporting, familiarity with DHIS2.
