About the role

The University of Malawi is looking for a skilled software developer to join its team advancing digital health solutions in Malawi. The role contributes to the development, maintenance and enhancement of MaHIS, ensuring seamless integration with DHIS2, and applies practical knowledge of the MaHIS and DHIS2 technology stacks to build robust, scalable applications supporting public health data management, reporting and analytics. The position is full-time and contract-based, based in Lilongwe.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the business analyst team to create the overall design of the software applications.
  • Design, develop and deploy new features and modules for MaHIS using its core technology stack, including backend services, APIs and user interfaces.
  • Integrate MaHIS with DHIS2 for real-time data synchronization, reporting and interoperability, complying with health data standards such as HL7 FHIR where applicable.
  • Troubleshoot, debug and optimise existing MaHIS and DHIS2-integrated applications for performance, security and usability.
  • Conduct code reviews, unit testing and documentation to maintain code quality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on requirements, prototyping and user training, and guide clients and users.
  • Monitor system performance, implement updates and contribute to disaster recovery and backup strategies.
  • Document and maintain system documentation, stay up to date on health informatics technologies and follow standard operating procedures.

Required profile

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.
  • At least 3 years of progressive work experience in software design and development.
  • Demonstrated experience developing FHIR-compliant software solutions.
  • Knowledge of health information standards and interoperability frameworks (HL7, FHIR, OpenHIE) is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of DHIS2 system configuration, data management and analysis.
  • Ability to multitask, work independently and under time pressure, and to collaborate in diverse teams.

Required skills

  • Ruby on Rails for backend and frontend development.
  • React.js, Vue.js or AngularJS, and JavaScript testing libraries such as Mocha and Chai.
  • Databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, CouchDB, Elasticsearch and MongoDB.
  • DevOps tools such as Docker, Jenkins/Circle CI, RabbitMQ and Nginx (an added advantage).
  • ETL pipeline automation with Airbyte and dbt, and experience integrating HAPI FHIR Server with DHIS2.
  • Proficiency in Linux/Unix environments.
