Finance Officer (Fixed-Term) – Lilongwe

About the role

The Finance Officer will support effective stewardship of UNICEF Malawi’s resources by delivering high‑quality financial management, accounting, treasury and compliance services. Reporting to the Budget & Finance Specialist, the role ensures efficient programme delivery and operational excellence through sound financial planning, budgeting, monitoring and risk management.

Key responsibilities

• Support budget preparation and implementation.
• Monitor programme expenditures and analyse financial performance.
• Process financial transactions and maintain accurate accounting records.
• Reconcile accounts and contribute to period‑end closure activities.
• Review financial reports and implementing‑partner transactions, identifying exceptions and risks.
• Strengthen internal controls and recommend corrective actions.
• Support cash and treasury management, including cash forecasting and bank‑account monitoring.
• Ensure availability of funds for programme and operational activities.
• Contribute to donor and statutory reporting requirements.
• Support audit exercises, oversight reviews and promote ethical financial practices.
• Facilitate knowledge‑sharing and capacity‑building initiatives.

Required profile

• Malawian national (open to Malawian nationals only).
• Relevant qualification in finance or accounting.
• Experience in financial management, budgeting and reporting within an international or public‑sector environment.
• Knowledge of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).
• Ability to ensure compliance with organisational policies and financial regulations.
