Assistant Registrar (Legal)

About the role

The University of Malawi is hiring an Assistant Registrar (Legal) to oversee the institution’s legal matters, provide counsel to management, and represent the university in court proceedings. This re‑advertised position is for a single appointment.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct litigations initiated by or against the university in coordination with relevant functions.
• Proactively resolve legal issues and develop solutions to avoid litigation.
• Set up systems to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
• Liaise with outsourced legal service providers and manage their obligations.
• Interpret laws affecting university operations and advise management and staff.
• Initiate and pursue legal proceedings, prepare cases for external counsel, and represent the university in arbitration and mediation.
• Draft, vet, and review legal letters, contracts, and agreements, and monitor obligations under those agreements.
• Maintain a database of court matters, produce relevant reports, and manage institutional legal risks.

Required profile

• Master of Laws (LLM) degree.
• Registered practitioner with the Malawi Law Society (MLS).
• Minimum five years of relevant legal work experience.
• Applicants with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and appropriate post‑qualification experience will also be considered.
