Accounts Assistant – Save the Children Project

About the role

Save the Children, in partnership with the Balaka District Council, is looking for a qualified Accounts Assistant to support the financial management of its donor‑funded project. Based at the Balaka District Education Office, you will work closely with the District Accountant and Project Coordinator to ensure transparent, accurate, and timely handling of project funds.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain up‑to‑date financial records, recording daily transactions and filing supporting documents.
• Assist in preparing project budgets, monitor expenditures, and support cost‑control measures.
• Process payments (cash, bank transfers, cheques) after verifying documentation and authorisations.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for management and donors.
• Manage petty cash, conduct regular bank reconciliations and monitor cash flow.
• Ensure compliance with donor and government financial regulations and support audit processes.
• Assist with payroll processing, applying correct tax and benefit deductions.
• Provide administrative support to senior finance staff and contribute to improving financial systems.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Finance, Applied Accounting, Auditing, Information Systems or a related field.
• Minimum four (4) years of progressive experience in donor‑funded projects.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting and budget management.
• High level of integrity, confidentiality and attention to detail.
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, communication and organisational skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency in financial and computer applications.
