Accounts Assistant – Project Finance Support

About the role

The Save the Children–Balaka District Council project is seeking a qualified Accounts Assistant to support financial management and accountability of project funds. Based at the Balaka District Education Office, the role works closely with the District Accountant and Project Coordinator to ensure transparent, accurate, and timely financial operations.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain up‑to‑date financial records, recording daily transactions and filing supporting documents.
• Assist in preparing project budgets, monitor expenditures, and support cost‑control measures.
• Process payments (cash, bank transfers, cheques) after verifying documentation and authorisation.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for management and donors.
• Manage petty cash, conduct bank reconciliations and monitor cash flow.
• Ensure compliance with donor and government financial regulations and support audit processes.
• Assist with payroll processing, applying correct deductions and maintaining payroll records.
• Provide administrative support to senior finance staff and contribute to improving financial systems.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Finance, Auditing or a related field.
• Minimum four years of progressive experience in donor‑funded projects.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving and organisational abilities.
• High level of integrity, confidentiality and attention to detail.

Required skills

• Proficiency in financial and computer applications.
• Knowledge of budgeting, financial controls and audit support.
