Psychosocial Counsellor – Mzuzu & Lilongwe (2 positions)

About the role

The Psychosocial Counsellor will assess and support the mental health needs of pregnant and postpartum women in the Mzuzu and Lilongwe districts. Working under the Team Leader, the counsellor will deliver therapy, psycho‑education and facilitate peer support groups as part of a four‑year Maternal Mental Health project.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive assessments of psychological needs for pregnant and postpartum women attending primary health care clinics.
• Provide individual, group and family psychotherapy, as well as crisis intervention.
• Implement therapeutic treatments in collaboration with mental‑health clinicians and district hospital staff.
• Deliver psycho‑education sessions and support the formation and capacity‑building of peer support groups.
• Assist peer groups in planning awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and advocate for mental‑health services.

Required profile

• Diploma in Psychosocial Counselling from a recognised, accredited institution.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar psychosocial counselling role.
• Commitment to the organisation’s Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy.
