Mental Health Clinician – Two Positions

About the role

The Mental Health Clinician will join Saint John of God’s Maternal Mental Health project, providing assessment, treatment and therapy for women with mental illnesses in Lilongwe and Mzuzu districts. Reporting to the Team Leader, the clinician will also train district and primary health care staff and ensure compliance with national mental health guidelines.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct patient interviews, physical and psychiatric examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and maintain comprehensive documentation.
• Diagnose psychiatric and medical conditions, prescribe appropriate treatments, and arrange referrals or transfers in line with the Mental Health Treatment Act and SJOG guidelines.
• Deliver individual, family and group therapy using diverse psychotherapeutic techniques.
• Train district and primary health care clinical staff on diagnosis and treatment following WHO’s mhGAP.
• Apply evidence‑based therapeutic approaches while respecting patients’ spiritual and cultural needs.
• Build capacity of healthcare facility employees through coaching and on‑the‑job training in maternal mental health.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine (Mental Health) from a recognised institution.
• Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in project coordination or a similar role within the NGO sector.
• Strict adherence to the organisation’s Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy.
