Assistant Systems Development Engineer (Internal Vacancy)

About the role

The University of Malawi is seeking a qualified Assistant Systems Development Engineer to join its internal team, focusing on developing and maintaining software systems that support academic and operational processes.

Key responsibilities

• Develop software systems to support academic processes and university operations.
• Provide technical support to end‑users and maintain system documentation.
• Design, implement and monitor databases for performance and reliability.
• Ensure web applications meet security, session‑management and best‑practice standards.

Required profile

• BSc in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in a busy software development environment; experience with higher‑education systems is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency in web programming languages such as PHP, ASP.NET, Java, Python or Ruby on Rails.
• Strong front‑end skills: JavaScript, jQuery, HTML and CSS.
• Experience with relational databases: MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server (2008+), Oracle.
• Understanding of LAN/WAN concepts as they relate to web applications.
• Ability to create and maintain comprehensive software documentation.
