Assistant Systems Development Engineer

About the role

The University of Malawi is seeking an Assistant Systems Development Engineer to design, develop and maintain software systems that support its academic and operational processes. The role involves close collaboration with end‑users and the IT team to ensure reliable, secure web applications for the campus community.

Key responsibilities

• Develop software systems to support academic processes and university operations.
• Provide technical support to end users and maintain system documentation.
• Design, implement and optimise relational databases.
• Monitor performance of newly deployed systems and resolve issues.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by management.

Required profile

• BSc in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years experience in a busy software development environment; experience in higher‑education systems is an advantage.

Required skills

• Solid understanding of web application architecture, security and session management.
• Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: PHP, ASP.NET, Java, Python, Ruby on Rails.
• Front‑end expertise with JavaScript, jQuery, HTML and CSS.
• Experience with relational databases such as MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server (2008 or newer) and Oracle.
• Ability to produce and maintain clear software documentation.
• Basic knowledge of LAN/WAN concepts as they relate to web applications.
