About the role

The University of Malawi is seeking a qualified Assistant Systems Development Engineer to join its internal team, focusing on developing and maintaining software systems that support academic and operational processes.

Key responsibilities

Develop software systems to support academic processes and university operations.
Provide technical support to end‑users and maintain system documentation.
Design, implement and monitor databases for performance and reliability.
Ensure web applications meet security, session‑management and best‑practice standards.

Required profile

BSc in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field.
Minimum 2 years of experience in a busy software development environment; experience with higher‑education systems is an advantage.

Required skills

Proficiency in web programming languages such as PHP, ASP.NET, Java, Python or Ruby on Rails.
Strong front‑end skills: JavaScript, jQuery, HTML and CSS.
Experience with relational databases: MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server (2008+), Oracle.
Understanding of LAN/WAN concepts as they relate to web applications.
Ability to create and maintain comprehensive software documentation.
