Human Rights Expert

About the role

Sustainable Future Consulting is looking for a Human Rights Expert to lead a study on the human rights and environmental impacts of mining activities in communities of Karonga District, Malawi. The consultant will work closely with local stakeholders to assess how mining affects land rights, livelihoods and environmental health.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a participatory research methodology to assess human rights and environmental impacts in mining‑affected communities.
• Engage vulnerable groups, including displaced persons and local residents, to gather qualitative and quantitative data.
• Analyse issues related to land rights, displacement, compensation, livelihoods, environmental rights, occupational safety and grievance mechanisms.
• Facilitate stakeholder workshops and community meetings to validate findings.
• Prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations for clients and policymakers.

Required profile

• Post‑graduate qualification in human rights, law or a related field.
• Minimum five years of experience conducting human rights research or assessments, preferably in the extractive‑industry context.
• Demonstrated knowledge of human rights issues linked to mining in Malawi.
• Experience in participatory research and working with vulnerable populations.
