Head of Academic Department – Multiple Faculties

About the role

The University of Malawi seeks dynamic, results‑oriented leaders to serve as Head of Academic Department across a range of faculties. The role provides strategic academic leadership, drives teaching excellence, research innovation and resource mobilisation at the departmental level.

Key responsibilities

• Lead implementation of university and school strategic objectives within the department.
• Ensure delivery of high‑quality, market‑responsive academic programmes aligned with national and global priorities.
• Promote a strong research and postgraduate training culture, overseeing curriculum review, accreditation and quality assurance.
• Mobilise resources through consultancies, grants, partnerships and income‑generating activities.
• Manage departmental finances, assets and infrastructure with good governance principles.
• Enhance student success via academic advising, progression monitoring and inclusive learning environments.
• Foster strategic partnerships with industry, government, professional bodies and international institutions.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised university.
• Academic rank of Senior Lecturer or higher.
• Minimum five years of experience in university teaching, research and academic administration.
• Demonstrated research productivity, postgraduate supervision and involvement in grants or projects.
• Proven leadership and management experience within higher education, with strong communication and change‑management abilities.
