Anesthesiologist

About the role

The AIC CURE Children’s Hospital Malawi is seeking a qualified Anesthesiologist to provide safe and effective anesthesia care for surgical patients, primarily children. The role includes clinical responsibilities, supervision of anesthesia staff, and oversight of critical care areas.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct pre‑operative anesthesia evaluations, order necessary investigations and determine the optimal anesthetic plan.
• Administer general, regional, MAC, local or combined anesthesia and manage the airway using mask, bag‑valve mask, intubation, LMA or other emergency techniques.
• Monitor and manage fluid resuscitation, blood loss, and patient vital signs throughout surgery.
• Oversee the functioning of anesthesia machines, oxygen supply, suction and related equipment in collaboration with biomedical staff.
• Perform regional anesthesia techniques and implement post‑operative pain management.
• Identify and treat intra‑operative and post‑operative anesthesia complications promptly.
• Maintain accurate documentation of patient data, medications, fluids and narcotic counts.
• Supervise nurse anesthetists, anesthesia technicians and oversee HDU/ICU care for critically ill patients.
• Participate in code reviews, debriefs and resuscitation efforts as needed.

Required profile

• Medical degree with board certification in Anesthesiology.
• Experience in pediatric anesthesia is preferred.
• Proven ability to supervise anesthesia staff and manage critical care units.
• Commitment to patient safety, accurate record‑keeping and adherence to clinical guidelines.
