National Epidemiologist

About the role

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Malawi is seeking a National Epidemiologist to lead the implementation of the “Strengthening Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response through the One Health Approach in Malawi (SP3ROHAM)” project. The role will support the country’s third priority area of the Country Programming Framework, focusing on surveillance, laboratory capacity and capacity development to improve national pandemic preparedness.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and strengthen national surveillance and early‑warning systems for epidemic and pandemic threats.
• Enhance laboratory capabilities for the detection and diagnosis of priority pathogens.
• Develop and deliver capacity‑building programmes for national institutions and personnel involved in One Health emergencies.
• Collaborate with partners including the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development, the Public Health Institute of Malawi, WHO, UNICEF and the World Bank.
• Provide technical guidance under the supervision of the FAO Representative and Programme Officer (Animal Health).

Required profile

• Advanced degree in epidemiology, public health, veterinary medicine or a related field.
• Proven experience in national or regional disease surveillance, laboratory strengthening and One Health initiatives.
• Strong understanding of pandemic preparedness frameworks and ability to work with multi‑sectoral stakeholders.

Required skills

• Expertise in epidemiological methods and data analysis.
• Knowledge of laboratory diagnostic techniques for zoonotic and human pathogens.
• Experience in designing and delivering training programmes for health professionals.
