Strategic Engagement Adviser – Policy, Population and Data

About the role

The Strategic Engagement Adviser is based in the UNFPA Malawi Country Office and reports to the Representative. The role leads the Policy, Population and Data Unit, working across thematic programmes to advance UNFPA’s work on demographic change, sustainable financing and evidence‑based development planning.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Policy, Population and Data Unit and coordinate with all programme units.
• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with government ministries, parliamentarians, donor agencies, UN bodies, civil society, academia and the private sector.
• Ensure population dynamics inform national development planning and that demographic intelligence guides policy development and implementation.
• Contribute to the operationalisation of UNFPA Strategic Plan 2026‑2029, especially Outcome 4 on adaptation to demographic change.
• Position UNFPA as a strategic partner and thought leader on demographic change and inclusive development.

Required profile

• Proven experience influencing senior government and development partners on policy and demographic issues.
• Deep understanding of population dynamics, sustainable financing and rights‑based policy frameworks.
• Experience working within UN systems or international development programmes, preferably with UNFPA.
