About the role
The Maternal and Child Health Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to women and newborns throughout the ante‑partum, intra‑partum and post‑partum periods. Working in a high‑pressure secondary care setting, the nurse delivers bedside care, monitors patients, manages emergency obstetric and neonatal equipment, and mentors junior staff.
Key responsibilities
- Provide evidence‑based nursing care, monitor labour, vital signs and administer medications.
- Operate and interpret cardiotocographs, fetal monitors, oxygen concentrators and resuscitation equipment.
- Support emergency obstetric and neonatal resuscitation and participate in rapid‑response teams.
- Mentor and coach nursing staff, interns and students in maternal‑child health.
- Uphold infection prevention and control (IPC) standards and ensure safe equipment handling.
- Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary case discussions and develop nursing care plans.
- Maintain accurate documentation, incident reporting and contribute to morbidity‑mortality reviews.
- Ensure availability, functionality and preventive maintenance of essential MCH equipment using tools such as Upkeep software.
Required profile
- Registered nurse qualified by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi.
- Strong clinical judgment and technical competence in maternal and child health.
- Ability to work under pressure within inter‑professional teams.
- Experience mentoring junior staff and promoting quality‑improvement initiatives.
Required skills
- Cardiotocograph operation and interpretation.
- Patient monitoring equipment (fetal monitors, vital‑sign monitors).
- Emergency obstetric and neonatal resuscitation techniques.
- Infection prevention and control procedures.
- Use of equipment maintenance software (e.g., Upkeep).
- Accurate clinical documentation and data reporting.
