Electronics & Informatics Intern (1-year renewable)

About the role

CRAFS, the Center for Resilient Agri‑Food Systems at the University of Malawi, is looking for an intern to support the development of resilient soil‑moisture and nutrient sensor systems. The position lasts for one year and may be renewed based on performance and funding, offering hands‑on experience at the intersection of electronics engineering, informatics and sustainable agriculture.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the design and prototyping of electronic sensors for soil moisture and nutrient monitoring.
• Develop data‑acquisition hardware and integrate IoT solutions for real‑time field monitoring.
• Conduct laboratory and field tests to validate sensor accuracy and resilience under varying environmental conditions.
• Collaborate with researchers to analyse data and refine sensor algorithms using MATLAB or Python.
• Document technical processes and present findings to stakeholders.
• Troubleshoot hardware and software issues in power‑constrained systems.
• Support the preparation of grant proposals and mentorship activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science degree (minimum credit) in Electronics, Physics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related field.
• Prior research experience with electronics, sensors or agricultural technologies.
• Hands‑on experience with 3D printing or CAD for sensor housing design.
• Understanding of environmental resilience challenges in agriculture.

Required skills

• Proficiency in MATLAB, Python and C++ for data analysis and embedded programming.
• Experience with PCB design and microcontroller platforms such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
• Knowledge of IoT communication protocols and low‑power/energy‑harvesting design.
• Familiarity with 3D printing and CAD tools for mechanical design.
