Compliance Officer Intern - Research Ethics Committee

About the role

The University of Malawi Research Ethics Committee (UNIMAREC) is seeking a Compliance Officer Intern. The intern plays a key role in checking that research approved by UNIMAREC is carried out according to UNIMAREC guidelines and national and international standards. The position is on a 12-month contract, with possible renewal depending on satisfactory performance.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure investigators follow their approved protocols and national regulatory requirements
• Inspect ongoing studies with at least one UNIMAREC member and prepare inspection reports
• Train UNIMAREC members and investigators in research ethics and standards, and advise them on good research practices
• Protect the rights, safety and well-being of research participants
• Assist the UNIMAREC Administrator in screening application packages, taking minutes at review meetings, documenting serious adverse events, completing material transfer agreements, annual progress reports and continuing review applications, and maintaining study files
• Update and manage the UNIMAREC website and internet client interface module

Required profile

• Master's degree from a recognised university; a doctorate is an added advantage
• At least two years of experience in a research-related field
• Practical knowledge of research proposal development and project monitoring and evaluation
• Knowledge of research ethics is an added advantage
