Art Studio Attendant (Ceramics and Art Studio)

About the role

The University of Malawi is recruiting one Art Studio Attendant (UM 14) to look after its ceramic and art studios. The post covers studio organisation, storage of artworks and raw materials, and supporting students and staff with production and exhibitions.

Key responsibilities

• Clean and organise the ceramic and art studios and keep them hygienic.
• Collect and store waste clay, feldspar, silica sand and other raw materials.
• Store and display student and staff artworks, and arrange them for exhibitions.
• Organise shelves, drawers, studio cabinets and galleries for orderly storage and display.
• Ensure the security of studio products and spaces.
• Control student work schedules and ensure adequate production of raw materials under the supervision of the Technician and Ceramic Assistants.
• Support making moulds, operating carving tools, making vases and other decorative items.
• Mobilise and convey items to the kilns when required.
• Carry out any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor and course lecturers.

Required profile

• Experience in the art, ceramics and pottery industries, including art galleries.
• Minimum of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).
• An added advantage: experience in painting and drawing, sculpture or ceramics production, processes and entrepreneurship at a recognised institution.

Required skills

• Knowledge of paints, crafts and pottery products is desirable.
• Working on the potter's wheel and in electric kilns is desirable.
• Raw material processing knowledge is desirable.
