Finance Officer – Fixed Term Position in Lilongwe

About the role

UNICEF Malawi is seeking a Finance Officer (Level 1) on a fixed‑term basis in Lilongwe. Reporting to the Budget & Finance Specialist, the incumbent will support the stewardship of organisational resources by delivering high‑quality financial management, accounting and treasury services that enable efficient programme delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation, monitoring and implementation of budgets and financial plans.
• Process financial transactions, maintain accurate accounting records and perform account reconciliations.
• Support cash and treasury management, including cash‑flow forecasting and bank account monitoring.
• Analyse financial performance, identify exceptions, and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare donor and statutory reports, and contribute to audit and oversight activities.
• Strengthen internal controls and promote ethical financial practices.
• Provide capacity‑building and knowledge‑sharing support to implementing partners.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or a related field.
• Relevant experience in financial management, budgeting, accounting or treasury functions, preferably in the public or non‑profit sector.
• Knowledge of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) and compliance requirements.
• Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Required skills

• Understanding of IPSAS.
• Experience with cash forecasting and treasury operations.
• Proficiency in financial reporting and analysis.
