Engineering Manager – Facilities & Maintenance

About the role

The Engineering Manager is responsible for overseeing all engineering and maintenance operations at the Protea Hotel in Lilongwe. This includes ensuring the safety, security, and optimal performance of the building, grounds, and physical plant while managing budgets and energy‑conservation initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the physical plant – HVAC‑R, refrigeration, plumbing, water‑treatment, electrical and fire‑safety systems.
• Ensure compliance with local regulations and safety standards.
• Develop and control energy‑conservation and cost‑saving measures.
• Prepare specifications, negotiate and administer service contracts.
• Distribute preventive‑maintenance work orders and monitor quality and timeliness.
• Oversee maintenance of guest rooms, public areas, restaurants, vehicles and recreational facilities.
• Create long‑term preventive‑maintenance and asset‑protection plans.
• Lead renovation or new‑construction projects, obtain bids and supervise contractors.
• Maintain relationships with city building/zoning departments, fire‑prevention bureau and vendors.
• Conduct monthly property inspections and guest‑room quality checks.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED with 3 years of engineering/maintenance experience and technical training in HVAC‑R, electrical or plumbing, or a 2‑year degree in Building & Construction, Engineering, Mechanics with 1 year of relevant experience and the same technical training.
