United Nations Resident Coordinator – Malawi

About the role

The United Nations Resident Coordinator (RC) in Malawi is the highest‑ranking UN development representative in the country. Reporting to the Secretary‑General, the RC leads the UN Country Team and ensures coordinated implementation of the UN Cooperation Framework and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Key responsibilities

• Represent the UN at senior government levels and engage with civil society, bilateral and multilateral partners, academia and the private sector.
• Lead the development, monitoring and reporting of the UN Cooperation Framework in close consultation with the Government of Malawi.
• Coordinate system‑wide UN support to the Government, fostering preventive and strategic engagement.
• Oversee the UN Country Team’s implementation of development programmes and ensure accountability across the UN system.
• Report annually to the host Government on the implementation of the UN Cooperation Framework and to the Secretary‑General on overall performance.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in international development, public policy or diplomatic service.
• Proven leadership of multi‑agency teams in complex environments.
• Deep understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
• Strong ability to build partnerships with governments, NGOs, donors and the private sector.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills at senior levels.
