Translator (English to Chichewa & Chitumbuka)

About the role

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is seeking a qualified Translator to support the Ecosystem-based Adaptation for Resilient Watersheds and Communities in Malawi (EbAM) project. The incumbent will translate a range of technical documents from English into the local languages Chichewa and Chitumbuka, ensuring accurate communication of project objectives and safeguards.

Key responsibilities

• Review agriculture, natural resources, gender, and environmental‑social safeguard documents and develop a translation workplan.
• Translate technical documents—including the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF), Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP), Household Approach, and Dimitra Approach—from English to Chichewa and Chitumbuka.
• Collaborate closely with the Office of Communications (OCC) and project communication focal points.
• Participate in technical meetings and presentations as required.

Required profile

• Fluent in English, Chichewa, and Chitumbuka with proven translation experience.
• Familiarity with agricultural, natural‑resource, and environmental‑social terminology.
• Ability to work under the supervision of the FAO Representative and technical guidance from senior advisors.
