About the role

The Maternal and Child Health Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to women and newborns throughout the ante‑partum, intra‑partum and post‑partum periods in Neno District. Working within the Secondary Care and Programs department, the nurse delivers bedside care, monitors patients, manages emergency obstetric and neonatal equipment, and supports quality improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver evidence‑based nursing care, including labour monitoring, vital sign assessment, medication administration and operation of equipment such as cardiotocographs and patient monitors.
  • Perform and document patient assessments in line with WHO Safe Childbirth Flowchart and support emergency resuscitation for mothers and newborns.
  • Mentor and coach nursing staff, interns and students in maternal and child health practices.
  • Maintain infection prevention and control standards, ensure safe handling of consumables and equipment.
  • Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary case discussions and develop comprehensive nursing care plans.
  • Ensure availability, functionality and preventive maintenance of essential MCH equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate nursing documentation, contribute to morbidity and mortality reviews and support data‑driven quality improvement.

Required profile

  • Registered Nurse qualified by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi.
  • Experience in maternal, obstetric and neonatal care, preferably in a secondary‑level facility.
  • Strong clinical judgment, ability to work under pressure and collaborate within inter‑professional teams.
  • Commitment to full‑time work (40 hours per week) and adherence to professional standards.
