Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Music Theory

About the role

The Department of Music and Dance at the University of Malawi is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the post of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Music Theory. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses, develop curricula, conduct research and supervise student projects.

Key responsibilities

• Teach, set and mark on time examinations for undergraduate courses
• Develop curricula for undergraduate studies; for Senior Lecturer candidates, also for postgraduate studies
• Conduct research, consultancies and publish in the area of specialisation
• Supervise student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels
• Take part in and present at academic seminars, concerts and outreach programmes
• Prepare students for academic assessment concerts at least twice every semester
• Carry out any other academic and official duties assigned from time to time

Required profile

• Master of Arts degree in Music, or PhD in Music
• Bachelor's degree with at least a credit; a Bachelor's degree in Music with distinction is encouraged and may lead to consideration for a Staff Associate position
• Demonstrable competence in music theory
• Ability to teach and play piano as a primary instrument of instruction
• Knowledge of jazz studies is also considered; university-level teaching experience is an added advantage
