Branch Manager – Underwriting

About the role

The Branch Manager will lead the Underwriting Department at Libertas General Insurance, overseeing daily operations, sales, and client relationships in Lilongwe. This senior position requires delivering branch targets, ensuring compliance, and driving growth across the Central and Northern regions.

Key responsibilities

• Manage all branch activities, including policy issuance, endorsements, and renewal reviews within defined turnaround times.
• Supervise underwriters, underwriting clerks, and sales offices, ensuring accurate premium booking and invoice processing.
• Conduct pre‑loss risk surveys, handle claims investigations, and negotiate settlements within authority.
• Monitor regulatory compliance (KYC, credit checks, premium directives) and maintain monthly/weekly premium reports.
• Analyze market opportunities, develop territory coverage strategies, and maintain strong relationships with clients and brokers.
• Oversee credit control, payment plans, and reconciliation of daily sales and receipts.

Required profile

• Advanced Diploma in Insurance (CII) or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree in Business, Insurance or related field.
• Minimum 4 years’ experience in general insurance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
• Proven track record in sales target achievement, client relationship management, and branch P&L oversight.
• Strong knowledge of Malawian insurance products, underwriting basics, claims processes, and regulatory environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 Suite.
• Experience with insurance management software/systems.
• Solid analytical and mathematical abilities.
