Software Developer – Digital Health (Contract)

About the role

The University of Malawi is looking for a skilled software developer to strengthen its digital health platform, MaHIS, and ensure seamless integration with DHIS2. The role is contract‑based, full‑time, and based in Lilongwe.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy new features for the MaHIS platform using Ruby on Rails and modern JavaScript frameworks.
• Integrate MaHIS with DHIS2 for real‑time data synchronization, adhering to health standards such as HL7 FHIR.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and optimise existing applications to improve performance, security and usability.
• Conduct code reviews, write unit tests, and maintain comprehensive documentation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Minimum three years of progressive software design and development experience.
• Experience with health‑information standards (HL7, FHIR) and DHIS2 configuration is a plus.
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Ruby on Rails (backend) and React.js / Vue.js / AngularJS (frontend).
• JavaScript testing libraries such as Mocha and Chai.
• Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, CouchDB, Elasticsearch, MongoDB.
• DevOps tools: Docker, Jenkins or CircleCI, RabbitMQ, Nginx.
• ETL pipelines using Airbyte and dbt; integration of HAPI FHIR Server with DHIS2.
• Proficiency in Linux/Unix environments.
