Mental Health Nurse – Maternal Mental Health Project

About the role

The Maternal Mental Health project, funded by KinderNotHilfe and BMZ, seeks qualified Mental Health Nurses to assess, treat, and support women with maternal mental health conditions in Lilongwe and Mzuzu.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments for pregnant and postpartum women.
• Plan and deliver therapeutic treatment, including medication, in collaboration with primary health care facilities and mental health clinicians.
• Facilitate referrals to appropriate medical, psychological, and social services.
• Provide individual, group, and family psychotherapy, as well as crisis intervention.
• Deliver psycho‑education to women, families, and community members.
• Coordinate regularly with PHC and district health facilities and represent the project.
• Build capacity of PHC staff through coaching and on‑the‑job training.
• Guide and train volunteer health advisors and support awareness‑raising campaigns to destigmatise mental illness.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing from a recognised, accredited institution.
• Mandatory certificate or diploma in Midwifery from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 2 years experience in both mental health and midwifery roles.
• Strict adherence to the organisation’s Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy.
