General Manager – Large‑Scale Mining Operation (Expat)

About the role

The General Manager will lead the transition of a world‑class rare‑earth project in Malawi from construction to full‑scale, sustainable production. Reporting to the executive leadership team, the role carries overall accountability for commissioning, operational readiness, ramp‑up and long‑term performance of the mining operation.

Key responsibilities

• Provide overall operational leadership across mining, processing, maintenance, technical services, HSE and site support.
• Lead the shift from construction and commissioning to stable, sustainable production.
• Develop and embed a high‑performance culture focused on safety, accountability and continuous improvement.
• Deliver on production, cost, safety and operational performance targets.
• Drive workforce capability development, organisational effectiveness and operational readiness.
• Manage operational budgets, business plans and performance‑improvement initiatives.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with government authorities, regulators, community stakeholders and corporate leadership.
• Ensure compliance with statutory, environmental and corporate governance requirements.

Required profile

• Degree in Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, Engineering or a related technical discipline.
• Extensive executive leadership experience in large‑scale mining operations.
• Proven track record as General Manager, Mine General Manager, Operations Manager or equivalent.
• Strong experience leading integrated mining and processing operations and successful commissioning or ramp‑up projects.
• Experience managing large multidisciplinary workforces in complex operational environments.
• Commercial acumen with responsibility for budgeting, business planning and operational performance.
