Global Health Security Technical Advisor – Zoonoses & AMR

About the role

The Global Health Security (GHS) Technical Advisor – Zoonoses & AMR will provide technical leadership and strategic guidance to strengthen zoonotic and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance across human and animal health sectors in Malawi. The role supports the STRIDES project’s aim to build robust capabilities for preventing, detecting, and responding to infectious disease threats.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical expertise on zoonotic disease and AMR surveillance, detection, reporting, and response for both human and animal health.
• Advise on design, implementation, assessment, and improvement of national and sub‑national disease laboratories.
• Develop, review, and update surveillance plans, diagnostic SOPs, guidelines, and related documents.
• Deliver training and technical support to laboratories to enhance detection of priority zoonotic diseases.
• Support integration of animal health data into national surveillance platforms and cross‑sectoral information systems.
• Coordinate sample management and transportation networks for human and animal health sectors.
• Lead project activities, ensure alignment with work plans, and assist with project design, budgeting, and recruitment.

Required profile

• Demonstrated expertise in human and animal health, zoonotic disease, and AMR surveillance.
• Experience working with government ministries responsible for livestock and health.
• Proven ability to develop and review technical documents, guidelines, and SOPs.
• Experience providing training and technical assistance to laboratory staff.
• Strong project management skills, including budgeting and recruitment support.
