Global Health Security Technical Advisor – Zoonoses & AMR

About the role

The Global Health Security (GHS) Technical Advisor I will provide technical leadership for zoonotic disease and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance across human and animal health sectors in Malawi. Working under the STRIDES project, the advisor will support the design, implementation and evaluation of integrated surveillance systems, laboratory capacity building and policy development.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical activities to strengthen zoonotic disease and AMR surveillance, detection, reporting and response.
• Provide expert advice on the design, implementation and improvement of human and animal health laboratories.
• Develop, review and update surveillance plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and related guidelines.
• Deliver training and technical support to laboratory staff for priority zoonotic disease detection.
• Facilitate integration of animal health data into national surveillance platforms and cross‑sectoral information systems.
• Support project design, budgeting, recruitment and administrative tasks such as manual updates and budget tracking.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in One Health, zoonoses or AMR surveillance in low‑resource settings.
• Demonstrated ability to work with government ministries and multi‑sectoral partners.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills applied to public‑health data and laboratory systems.
• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.

Required skills

• Technical expertise in human and animal health surveillance, detection and response.
• Knowledge of laboratory SOPs, sample management and diagnostic workflows.
• Experience developing surveillance guidelines and training materials.
