Agronomist – Alternative Investments

About the role

Old Mutual Investment Group is seeking an experienced Agronomist to support its alternative‑investments strategy across Africa. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise on cash crops, soil health, pest and disease management and help drive sustainable, high‑yielding production.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on crop selection, rotation, planting schedules and harvesting methods suited to local conditions.
• Conduct soil assessments and recommend fertilisation, liming and soil‑improvement strategies.
• Monitor crops and provide integrated pest, disease and weed‑control recommendations, using both chemical and non‑chemical solutions.
• Perform regular field inspections, collect performance data and identify risks early.
• Apply current agricultural research, trial new techniques, inputs or varieties to improve efficiency and sustainability.
• Promote sustainable farming practices such as conservation agriculture, efficient water use and soil preservation.
• Support farmers and stakeholders with practical recommendations and ensure implementation of best practices.
• Develop seasonal crop plans, document field activities and report on performance, inputs and outcomes.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Agriculture in Agronomy and Crop Science or Horticulture.
• Proven experience in agronomy, crop nutrition and pest/disease management.
• Strong analytical and data‑interpretation abilities.
